TRAVEL TO PRINCETON

You are encouraged to book your flight, if at all possible, to Newark International Airport (EWR). Second choice would be Philadelphia (PHL). John F. Kennedy (JFK) and LaGuardia (LGA) on Long Island are also possibilities, but much less convenient than EWR or PHL.

Princeton University is located in central New Jersey, approximately 50 miles southwest of New York City and 45 miles northeast of Philadelphia. To reach Princeton, we recommend one of the following routes:

BY PLANE:

For domestic travellers, Newark Airport is generally more convenient, although in some cases airline connections may be such that the slightly longer drive from Philadelphia airport (60 minutes, versus 50 for Newark) is compensated. International travellers should also aim to arrive at Newark, which is served by many international carriers. Kennedy Airport is also an option, but is considerably less convenient. For example, the drive from JFK traverses three NY City boroughs (Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island) and takes 1.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic.

From Newark Airport

One can rent a car, take the AIRLINK from Newark Airport to the train Sunday schedule, Monday-Friday schedule, or Saturday schedule. train, or take the PRINCETON AIRPORTER limousine (van). If you rent a car, follow the signs at the airport exit and get on the NJ Turnpike heading south and follow the instructions below for travelling to Princeton by car from the north. To take the train you must first take the AIRLINK bus from the Airport to Newark's Penn Station (there is an area for buses next to each of the three Newark terminals). Once at Penn Station follow the directions for "BY TRAIN" below--Newark's Penn Station is on the way from New York's Penn Station to Princeton. The PRINCETON AIRPORTER has an information counter at the baggage claim area in each terminal at Newark Airport. Reservations can be made at the desk when you arrive at the airport for your trip to Princeton. However, reservations must be made in advance for your return trip to the airport. The one-way cost is approximately $20 per person. The trip takes approximately 90 minutes. The shuttle service runs every hour, at fifteen minutes past the hour, from 7:15 a.m. to 10:15 p.m. Sunday - Friday. A reduced schedule is in effect on Saturday. One should contact the Princeton Airporter for specifics and reservations at (609)587-6600.

From Philadelphia Airport

The best option from Philadelphia is to rent a car (Just under an hour drive). In that case you should follow the signs at the airport exit to I95 North and then follow the directions for arriving by car from the south below. It is also possible to make the trip by rail, although this can be quite time consuming (2 to 2.5 hours). Take the SEPTA airport shuttle to 30TH STREET STATION and then follow the directions under "BY TRAIN" below.

From JFK Airport

You can either rent a car or take the PRINCETON AIRPORTER. If you choose the latter, we recommend that you make reservations ahead of time by calling (609)587-6600. (If that's not possible, contact us for help remillar@viper.princeton.edu.) If you rent a car, exit the airport onto the westbound Belt Parkway. Follow for "the Belt" for about 17 miles until you get to the Verrazano Narrows bridge, which is a few miles past Coney Island. Exit from the right lane onto the bridge. The Verrazano bridge will lead to the Staten Island Expressway (I278). Follow I278 for about 10 miles to the NJ Turnpike, which is just past the Goethals bridge. Take the Turnpike south and follow the directions for "BY CAR: From the North" below.

PLEASE NOTE: The Dinky shuttle train does not run as frequently on weekends, so check a train schedule to make sure that there is a connection when you arrive at Princeton Junction. Taxis meet most rush hour trains but cannot be depended upon to meet off-peak and weekend trains. At those times, it is simpler to take a taxi from Princeton Junction. Follow US 1 South about 18 miles to the exit at Route 571 (WASHINGTON ROAD), which is an intersection with three gas stations (Getty, Gulf, and Exxon). Turn RIGHT and follow Washington Road (Route 571) for about one mile, at which point you will cross a bridge after which there is an intersection with a light. Continue past that intersection up the hill (another 0.2 miles). The first building on your right (a modern four-story brick structure) is Jadwin Hall, the physics building. It is adjacent to the Taplin Auditorium, where the conference will be held. If you are headed to the Nassau Inn, continue past Jadwin Hall for another half mile to the intersection of Washington Road and Nassau street (traffic light and movie theatre). Turn left onto Nassau and go three blocks to Palmer Square, which will be on your right. The Nassau Inn is at the back of the Square.
